Techs Corner and Frequently Asked Questions

Some valuable tips and tricks to keep your analyzer running smoothly.

The importance of smoke testing oil furnaces...

Think pulling a smoke test is not that important? Click here to see what can happen to your sensors!

Moisture in your Water Trap...

It is important to dry out your water trap if there is moisture or condensation. If it remains there, it could be sucked in next time the pump draws for readings, and moisture is the O2 & CO & NOx cell's worst enemy! After you return to your shop for the day (or any time you notice moisture in the trap), disassemble the water trap, swab the inside of the trap with a paper towel, and leave unassembled to dry overnight (especially on the weekends).

Probe Tips for Fyrite Pro's and PCA's...

ALL ~ Be careful if you have the curved tip to your thermocouple. This thermocouple expands as it heats in the stack. You need to drill a little larger hole to give you clearance. Also, remove the probe SLOWLY from the flue. Watch as the tip clears the metal. If you break the tip off your thermocouple, you will breach the bi-metal composition. This will not allow proper readings. And please note, this particular injury is not covered under Bacharach's warranty.

Installing your own O2 cells...

MODEL 300s ~ the plastic screw should be at a 2-o'clock position when installing the new cell. When you reattach the top flange plate, do NOT overtighten, this can crack the flange or the O2 cell base.

FYRITE PROS ~ Be careful when opening the anaylzer casing, there are short wires on many fittings. Pulling it apart too quickly can snap these fittings off the motherboard. Unplug all wires from the motherboard and gently put it face-down. In the front, the hoses will still be attached.

PCAs ~ VERY IMPORTANT!
Loosen the screws that mount the sensor harness
to the motherboard before removing any sensors!

Handhelds and Batteries...

ALL HANDHELDS ~ Make it a habit to carry double the number of new batteries you might need. We've all been there when you buy a brick of batteries and one of them is low on power or dead.

ALL HANDHELDS ~ Buy GOOD QUALITY batteries. Don't scrimp and buy the dollar-store brand for your equipment. It is sensitive computerized equipment, and deserves a good battery. We recommend Duracell, Duracell Ultra, Energizer or Energizer Max.

ALL HANDHELDS ~ Do NOT mix battery types (alkaline needs to be with alkaline)!

ALL REPLACEABLE BATTERY ANALYZERS ~ If unit acts strangely (shutting off unexpectedly, turning on automatically, recalibrating itself, giving sporatic service), check the battery contacts to make sure there is no corrosion, and that the metal tab is making good contact with the battery.

MONOXOR II ~ Do NOT use the "E"s (Energizer E-squared) in your Monoxor. They are more for digital cameras and gameboys, and do not let the analyzer function properly.

Inline Filters (all PCAs, some Fyrite Pros)...

If your unit is not taking O2 or CO readings, not drawing air into the unit, or the pump sounds louder, your inline filter could be clogged. If left unattended, this can damage the pump. Oil furnaces with smoke over 1, or natural gas/boilers with flame impingement, can create a sooty exhaust, and clog your filter quickly. (Not all Fyrite Pro's have the in-line filter, but some of the original units do. If you are not doing oil furnaces, we can remove this filter.)

Thermocouple Plugs ...

ALL HANDHELDS ~ On a routine basis, check your plug to make sure all fittings are tight (make sure wire holding screws and tight, wires are not broken, etc.). If you are having problems with readings that would indicate the thermocouple not making connection, carefully open the plug and check all fittings.
